About Our Research

Our lab studies the way that people learn new skills, and how processes that control the execution of motor skills and enable the integration of sensory and motor information change as a function of learning and practice.

Our research is presently centred on the education of health professionals (specifically, surgical trainees), but we also study coaches, high-performance athletes, musicians, and pilots. Much of our work focuses on the motor and perceptual systems. In particular, we study how integration between these systems changes with practice, and how feedback and assessment can be effectively implemented to support skill acquisition. 

We use a variety of behavioural, kinematic, and electrophysiological tools for our research including optical and magnetic movement capture, electroencephalography, and force transducers in addition to more traditional tools such as pencils and drawing pins!

Attention Studies

We are examining how attentional resources are allocated at various stages in the surgical training process.

Competency-Based Medical Education

We have a number of ongoing projects that are exploring the implementation of Competence by Design.

Feedback and Assessment in Medical Education 

We are developing and validating new methods of evaluating skill acquisition and learning in surgical trainees. We are also establishing indices of "typical" performance.

Motion Control Studies

We are developing new technologies and algorithms for tracking limb segments, hands, and instruments to determine various attributes of movement in different populations.

Music Cognition Studies

We are engaged in a number of studies in the LIVELab that are examining the neuroscience that underlies music perception, cognition, and performance.

Sensorimotor Interactions

We are studying how the auditory, visual, and motor systems interact with each other under varying cognitive load in an effort to better understand the processes that support the learning and execution of complex skills.

Transition Points in Surgical Training

We are looking at ways to facilitate the transition through the various stages of medical training.

Video-Based Training Studies

We are examining how video-based training can be most effectively used in surgical and sports training.
